ANTI-SKID SURFACING & HIGH FRICTION SURFACE COATINGS

Hot and cold applied anti-skid surfacing using calcined bauxite for bends, junctions, crossings and high-risk areas across Wales and the South West.

PROFESSIONAL ANTI-SKID SURFACING SERVICES

Anti-skid surfacing — also known as high friction surfacing (HFS) — significantly improves grip and reduces skidding accidents. Roman Road Marking is an experienced anti-skid surfacing contractor serving councils, developers and highway authorities across Newport, Cardiff, Swansea and the whole of South Wales.

High friction surface coatings provide a cost-effective intervention that dramatically improves stopping distances — often reducing accidents by 50% or more at treated sites.

HOW ANTI-SKID SURFACING WORKS

Anti-skid surfacing uses a resin binder to bond high-friction aggregate — typically calcined bauxite — to the existing road surface. Calcined bauxite has a polished stone value exceeding 70, creating dramatically improved grip even in wet conditions.

Hot Applied Systems

Hot applied anti-skid uses a thermosetting resin heated and applied to the road, followed by calcined bauxite aggregate. This is the standard specification for trunk roads and motorway applications, providing exceptional durability.

Cold Applied Systems

Cold applied anti-skid uses epoxy or polyurethane resin at ambient temperature. Highly versatile, commonly used for urban roads, school zones, cycle lanes and pedestrian areas.

WHERE ANTI-SKID IS NEEDED

The statistics: TRL research consistently shows correctly specified high friction surfacing reduces accidents at treated sites by 50-70%. It is one of the most cost-effective road safety interventions available to highway authorities.

TYPE 1 VS TYPE 2

Type 1 — Premium High Friction Surfacing

Calcined bauxite aggregate with hot or cold resin. Highest specification, required by National Highways for trunk roads. BBA HAPAS approved systems ensure compliance with national standards. Service life of 8-12 years.

Type 2 — Standard Anti-Skid

Alternative aggregates with resin binder. Cost-effective for lower-speed urban roads, car parks and estate roads.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Type 1 high friction surfacing using calcined bauxite typically lasts 8-12 years. Type 2 treatments last around 5-8 years. Lifespan depends on traffic volume and location.

Type 1 uses calcined bauxite for the highest friction improvement, specified for trunk roads and high-risk locations. Type 2 uses alternative aggregates, suitable for lower-speed urban roads and car parks.

Costs vary depending on the system type, aggregate specification, site access and total area. We provide free site surveys and detailed no-obligation quotes for all anti-skid projects.

Yes. Coloured anti-skid is commonly used for cycle lanes, bus lanes and pedestrian zones. Red, green, blue and buff are the most common colours, achieved through pigmented resin binders.
